Update for Fire Safety Program Activity

Talked with Andy Tate on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. From that conversation we learned that the crews have been on a project in the Spearfish area. That project is scheduled to by completed in late July. Clearing for the properties in Box Canyon will begin immediately thereafter (we expect to see them here by Aug 1... given the schedule does not slip.)

When asked specifically about our fears of dwindling funds for the project, Mr. Tate assured us that this project is included in his long term budget. He implied that there is money for the project to be seen to completion.

Fire Safety Program for Ghost Canyon and Box Canyon Areas

December 30, 2008 - Mr. Tate contacted us with informaiton conerning forms required by the State for this project. If you are interested in having this done on your property and have not completed these forms, do so quickly. The crew is working in this area. They would like to complete as many lots as possible and cannot start on a lot until these forms are on file.

If you have questions, contact Mr. Tate at the number shown. Complete the forms and mail them to:

October 2008 - The South Dakota Department of Agriculture has initiated a Wildland Fire Suppression program to help with reduction of fuels in subdivisions in the Ghost Canyon and Box Canyon areas. This is a 100% funded program. Documentation from the State can be reviewed in the pdf file attached here.

What all this means to you is that there is help available for clearing your property. This help includes not only cutting and stacking; but, also, burning the piles when weather conditions are right. This would be an added advantage to owners who do not yet live on their property. This help comes at no-charge. All that is required is the permission of the property owner for the crews to work.

Andy Tate, the Fuels Specialist for this area, expressed a desire to be able to address as many lots in this area at one time. He hoped that once the crew was in place, the men could to work in the same area to make a significant impact.

The photos show what a property looks like after clearing. We have learned in talking with Mr. Tate, that the crews can either be left to clear based on their guidelines or can be directed by the homeowner for more or less clearing over portions of the property.
